Colorado Becomes First U.S. State With Comprehensive AI Act
Governor Jared Polis signed Senate Bill 24-205 into law on May 17, 2024, making Colorado the first U.S. state to enact a comprehensive AI law regulating both developers and deployers of high-risk AI systems. The law was originally set to take effect February 1, 2026 but has since been amended to a June 30, 2026 effective date amid implementation discussions.
